19 My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, 20 because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires. 21 Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you. 2 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. 23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25 But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.
Dan's Thoughts:
Being quick to listen (responding) and slow to speak (versus reacting) is something I've struggled with my whole life. How are you doing at responding, versus reacting when things don't go your way? At the root of us reacting instead of responding is "moral filth and the evil." However, if we do more than just "listen" to the Word, but actually "do" what it says, our actions will lead to blessings within our lives and the lives we touch. When you look in the mirror, what do you see? Is it a person who is honoring God and continually being transformed, or are you merely a shadow of the Christ you worship?
Questions For Reflection:
1. Which verse stuck out to me the most? Why?
2. What is God telling me through this passage?
3. What transformation in my heart needs to take place because of what this passage means?
